Trails
for Hiking - Hiking trails can be found in National Parks, resorts, private
land and archeological sites throughout Cayo. Some trails
will lead you through jungles of hardwood and soft tropical
foliage, others take you to lakes, caves, rivers, waterfalls,
villages, and Maya ruins. Whether you're just out for an afternoon
hike or planning a more extensive exploration, experienced
guides can show you the jungle in a way you'd never see by
yourself. All you need are comfortable clothes, hiking boots,
insect repellent, and a camera.

The Mesoamerican
Trail
The overall idea of this project is to contribute to the development
of a trail system or systems that run the length of Central America,
potentially connecting Mexico to Colombia. In addition, WCS envisions
the potential development of one or two trails that run generally
east-west across the isthmus connecting the Pacific and the Atlantic
oceans. This system of trails has the potential to become
the Central American equivalent of the hugely successful long-distance
trails that exist world-wide....
Belize also has
excellent trail possibilities. Unlike the rest of Central America,
Belize is a sparsely populated country with expansive wild areas
in which there are very few communities. Belize is similar to
the rest of the region, however, in that the country has few resources
to manage protected areas. There are numerous trails in many of
the protected areas but it seems they are not maintained and have
little supporting infrastructure. Many of the people I interviewed
asserted that existing trails within protected areas should be
worked on first before long-distance trails are developed.

Hiking in Stann Creek District
Stann Creek offers what might arguably be the best experience in camping, trekking and nature trailing in Belize. At 150 square miles, The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise of trails, waterfalls, lagoons and lush terrain. With an extensive network of marked and unmarked trails that vein the reserve, hikers have the opportunity to make shorter treks alone or use a guide for extended camping trips.
