Winter Wonderland
Perhaps you are here on your vacation time or due to a time of transition in your life or because you were drawn to be here. Maybe the idea of being in a warm climate at this time of year appealed to your senses.
Native Belizeans are likely to say that it is a bit chilly these days. Winter is here and the cool air brings out the long sleeve shirts, socks, and lightweight jackets. Some will layer their clothes as if a big snow storm were about to hit. "I can feel the cold in my bones," some might say.
A tropical holiday in the winter often means being thrust into great contrasts. Shed all the clothes, pull on the shorts and tank top, and look like a tourist. The contrast in temperatures alone can create the tourist effect, and after freezing winds and snow, no one would think of socks where the grass is still green and bushy.
Christmas lights glow in the warm tropic sea breeze and Placencia's sand is the closest anyone will come to having a white Christmas. Poinsettias, Mexican plants imported throughout the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year, can be found in gardens here and there, creating a more familiar look. And don't forget the familiar holiday songs, with their reggae and tropical twists, wafting out of nearly every window.
But snow never falls. Silhouetted palm trees are seen in most every sunset. Fruit trees are laden with their bounty, and farmers have just laid their crops in the ground.
All the Ideal companies accept that it is the down season. They just cannot sell many of their frozen pop treats right now. Nobody wants a cold snack.
There's black cake instead of fruitcake, rice and beans instead of mash potatoes and bollos....well, just because!
So wipe the sweat from your brow as you climb the ancient pyramid, wear sunblock while on the boat, and enjoy your holiday in our winter wonderland.
